چکیده

Our survey of private manufacturing firms finds the size of hidden “unofficial” activity to be much larger in Russia and Ukraine than in Poland, Slovakia and Romania. A comparison of cross-country averages shows that managers in Russia and Ukraine face higher effective tax rates, worse bureaucratic corruption, greater incidence of mafia protection, and have less faith in the court system. Our firm-level regressions for the three Eastern European countries find that bureaucratic corruption is significantly associated with hiding output. JEL Codes: H26, K42, O17

Why Do Firms Have Information Systems?

In this essay, it is suggested that a multi-level interaction perspective offers insight in answering the fundamental question, “Why do firms have IS?” The role of humancomputer interaction (HCI) in firms is recast in this context and seen to be basic to the modern firm’s interactions more broadly, with implications for firm capabilities and organizational learning.

Endogenous Cartel Formation with Free Market Entry and Firm Heterogeneity∗

Why do large firms choose to compete with a cartel rather than to cooperate? Bos and Harrington (2010) explained why small firms do not join in a cartel by introducing heterogeneous firms. But it is still unclear why large firms do not join in a cartel. This paper shows a possibility that only mid-level productive firms benefit from joining a cartel by considering endogenous choices of firm-pro...

Globalisation , Productivity and Technology Research Paper 2003 / 45 Exporting , Productivity and Agglomeration : A Difference in Difference Analysis of Matched Firms

In this paper we consider three questions. Why do only some firms enter export markets? What are the benefits to the firm from export market entry? Why do some of these firms exit the market at a future date? Using data on UK manufacturing firms from 1988 to 2002 we find evidence that information spillovers between firms can raise the probability of entry and for a matched sample of firms there...

Patent Strategies of Small Danish High-tech Firms

Revised draft

In his famous article on “The nature of the firm”, Ronald Coase (1937) sought to answer the question why firms exist, why there are many firms and not just one, why people do not work as individual producers but rather in firms. He suggested that transaction costs could explain the boundaries of the firm and that suggestion later on gave rise to an abundant literature on vertical integration. T...

Why Do Firms Build Network Partnerships in Hypercompetitive Environments? an Explanation from the Resource-based View

D’Aveni (1994) suggests that the only way for firms to survive in a hypercompetitive environment is to relentlessly compete against each other. Yet, we notice that intense competitive conditions lead firms not only to compete but also cooperate. Using the RBV as a theoretical lens, we examine why firms tend to form cooperative network partnerships in hypercompetitive environments. We suggest th...
